Summer Jewellery Care: How to Protect Your Silver and Ceramic Pieces

Summer and jewellery have a complicated relationship. The warmth, the sea, the long days outdoors — all of it is exactly where you want to wear your favourite pieces. But salt water, sunscreen, sweat and heat are also among the fastest ways to dull silver and stress the materials around it.
The good news is that a little awareness goes a long way. You do not need to leave your jewellery at home — you just need to know what to watch for and what to do afterwards.
The Main Enemies in Summer
Understanding what damages silver and ceramic in warm weather makes it much easier to protect against it.
- Salt water — accelerates tarnishing on sterling silver and can weaken the bond between metal components over time. Rinse pieces in fresh water after any sea exposure.
- Sunscreen and body oils — leave a film on silver that builds up and dulls the surface. Apply sunscreen first, let it absorb fully, then put your jewellery on.
- Chlorine — swimming pools are particularly harsh on silver. Chlorine reacts with the copper in the sterling alloy and can cause discolouration that is difficult to reverse. Remove pieces before swimming.

Wipe after every wear
After a day out, wipe your silver pieces with a soft, lint-free cloth before storing them. This removes the oils, sweat and environmental residue that would otherwise sit on the surface overnight and begin to tarnish it.
Clean gently when needed
If tarnish builds up, a bowl of warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush is enough for most pieces. Work gently, rinse thoroughly and dry completely before storing — moisture left in crevices is where tarnish begins.
Store away from humidity
Bathrooms are the worst place to store jewellery in summer. The combination of steam and shifting temperatures is hard on silver. Keep pieces in a cool, dry drawer or in an airtight pouch with a small silica gel packet.
